A Pomona, Calif., police officer was shot and killed and another was wounded Friday night by a man who remained barricaded inside an apartment complex Saturday.
"It is with a heavy heart that I must report that one officer did not survive. The second officer is in stable condition," Pomona Police Chief Mike Olivieri said Saturday morning on Twitter.
The dead officer was identified as Gregory Casillas, 25, of Upland, said Lt. Dave Smith of the Los Angeles County coroner's office.
At a news conference Saturday morning, authorities said the incident began as a police pursuit that ended near the apartment complex when the man's car crashed. He ran from his vehicle and was followed by officers on foot.
The man went into the apartment complex and barricaded himself inside one of the units. When officers arrived, authorities said, he fired through a door, hitting the two officers.
Saturday morning, a loud bang was heard and an officer called for the man to come out with his hands up. Officials said SWAT officers made contact with the man. Police said they didn't know how many weapons he had with him.
More than a dozen Pomona police officers, L.A. County sheriff's deputies and county fire vehicles blocked the street in front of the apartment building. A few of SWAT officers were gathered outside the entrance. Every so often, their muffled megaphone calls to the suspect to come out echoed through the street.
Neighbors _ some wrapped in blankets or wearing hooded jackets _ watched the scene unfold from behind police tape. A few were standing on top of their cars in the rain for a better view when a flash-bang device detonated around 10 a.m. An officer then again ordered the suspect to leave through the front door.
"Come outside with your hands up," he said. "Come on out."
