The Hunter Valley Polo Challenge presents a perfect opportunity for Novocastrians to take a weekend drive out of the city and enjoy a countryside picnic, Wirragulla Polo Club president Beau Blundell says.
The historic club, which was founded in 1923, is hosting its flagship competitive event next weekend. It is expected to draw about a dozen teams from around the state for two days of polo at Tabbil Creek Polo Ground in Dungog.
Mr Blundell described the event for spectators as a cross between a picnic with friends and day at the races.
"If they've not seen polo before, it will be a vastly different experience to one they've ever had," he said.
"It's one of the greatest thrills to watch, and certainly to play. But from a spectators side of things, country polo is really interesting. It's very fast, very physical."
After securing a new naming rights sponsor in Kloster Volkswagen, which Mr Blundell said was essential to continuing the renowned competition, the club is encouraging Novocastrians to hit the road for a day out in the Hunter Valley and a polo experience.
"Entry is $10 for adults and kids under 16 under are free," Mr Blundell said.
"You can bring a picnic if you like or you are more than welcome to use the club's facilities there. We have hot food and a fully stocked bar as well."
Wirragulla Polo Club aligns the Hunter Valley Polo Challenge each year with a community fundraiser.
"We've supported Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service for around about 15 years," Mr Blundell said.
"We have a big dinner on the ground on Saturday night where we have an auction where all the proceeds go to the service."
Mr Blundell added: "Each we try and give about $10,000, that's our aim and we've been very successful in achieving that marks for the last four or five years."
