Polly Hudson: Restaurant diner tells Cliff Richard 'he must be dead now'

Cliff Richard has been in showbiz for 60 years.

He probably thought he’d seen it all, and had every experience possible... so in a way, it was probably quite a nice surprise for something new to happen to him.

Might have been a bit nicer though if that new thing wasn’t having to convince someone that he was still alive.

Cliff was recently on a... no, I can’t do it – let’s say a not winter, er, vacation... with friends and they took him to their favourite restaurant.

“I saw this man on a table on the other side of the room,” Cliff remembers, “I saw him talking and you get used to it when people spot you.

"He looked up, pointed and talked again. He walked over to us. He said “Hello, what is your name?” So I said “My name is Cliff Richard.” He said “Non, he must be dead now.”

Cliff told the story of his incredible resurrection at a gala dinner to honour his six decade long career hosted by The Variety Club, which raised over £120,000 for the children’s charity.

As well as singing some of his greatest hits, the 78-year-old also showed how down to earth he is by having a little moan about how things aren’t as good now as they were in his day.

Cliff Richard says that he would rather '10 guilty people went free, than one innocent person went to prison'

“We come from a generation where you had to sell a million records to get a Gold disc, and just to underline how bad the situation is in our industry now, 100,000 gets you gold. People don’t seem to buy records anymore.”

Still, at least it’s the music industry and not you who is RIP, eh, Cliff?
