Pollution incident turns Bristol river blue - Environment Agency investigating

The Environment Agency is investigating the source of a pollution incident which left one of South Bristol's main rivers a worrying shade of bluey-white.

People in Brislington noticed and reported the change in colour of the Brislington Brook in the Nightingale Valley, a wooded green space popular with people across Brislington, Broomhill and St Anne's.

One walker in the area said he was one of the people who reported it to the Environment Agency.

"It's running white this morning," he said.

"I only walked from the Boat Screen up to the Pack Horse Bridge, but it was as white as I have ever seen due to pollution. It will run all down to the Avon, but I have no idea where it starts upstream. Often small industries seem to wash out various tanks into the river, this is something that has been reported in the past," he added.

The Brislington Brook is one of South Bristol's longest tributaries to the River Avon, and rises on Dundry Slopes before running through Hengrove, along the Airport Road between on the southern edge of Knowle and then across to Brislington and into the Nightingale Valley.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said they had the pollution incident reported to them.

"The Environment Agency is aware of the pollution incident on the Brislington Brook in Bristol," a spokesperson said.

"Officers have attended site and believe the pollution has now passed through.

"We are investigating the extent and source of the problem.

"We encourage people to call the Environment Agency hotline to report pollution incidents on 0800 80 70 60. More information can be found online here," she added.
