Pollokshields to welcome 120 new homes as part of major new housing development

Pollokshields is set to welcome 120 new homes after plans to transform the area were approved.

Southside Housing Association was given the go-ahead to demolish existing flats five and six-storey flats from the 1960s to build the new properties.

The development will see land bounded by St Johns Quadrant, Maxwell Drive, Shields Road and St Andrews Drive used as part of the masterplan.

A mix of one, two and three-bed apartments, two-bed wheelchair-accessible apartments and three and four-bed main-door maisonettes are proposed across 14 buildings which vary in height from one to four floors.

A design application for the proposal explains that a series of “urban villa blocks” will be “set within well-designed landscaped spaces that refer to the historic grain of Pollokshields.

The first phase of the housing association’s development was completed in summer 2019 with the new approved plans to become the second and third phases delivered.

The plans add: “The demolition of the existing five and six-storey slab blocks and the design of the ‘urban villa’ typology opens up the site, allowing daylight to penetrate the site while affording the opportunity for the creation of new vistas and pedestrian connections."
