Pollokshields, Langside and Govanhill among libraries not included in Glasgow Life reopening plans

Several of Glasgow's libraries are under threat of long-term closure due to the financial impact of the coronavirus crisis.

Pollokshields, Langside and Govanhill libraries are among the venues that will be closed for the foreseeable future.

Glasgow Life has said that financial losses of £12 million has forced them to change their 'operational model' and for this reason, not all of their venues will reopen to the public.

As previously reported by Glasgow Live, there will be a phased return to normality for some the city's libraries.

Ibrox, Pollokshaws and Shettleston opened their doors on Monday, to be followed by Partick next week. Easterhouse, Drumchapel and the Gorbals will be reopening on August 31 while Possilpark, Bridgeton and Royston won't be opening until October 5.

A date has yet to be set for when the Mitchell Library will be able to open its doors.

Glasgow Life are continuing to work with Glasgow City Council to 'review and prioritise' which venues and services can reopen but have said it's unlikely that services that haven't already been outlined will be opening in the near future.

A spokesperson for Glasgow Life said: “We have been very clear that the financial challenge facing Glasgow Life because of Covid-19 is unprecedented.

“We know people love and value the services and venues we deliver but since lockdown began we have lost £12 million of income from memberships and ticket sales to-date and expect to lose tens of millions by the end of the financial year. It is essential for Glasgow Life that we develop an operational model that is sustainable now and in the future.

“The fundamental principle that informs which venues and services can restart is the financial landscape that Glasgow Life will have to operate within for the foreseeable future."
