Pollokshields fire: Jumble sale fundraiser organised by families forced to leave their homes

A jumble sale has been organised to raise money for the residents affected by a fire in Pollokshields.

Locals are being asked for donations and food to help raise money to support the families displaced by the blaze on McCulloch Street on June 1.

Tabassum Niamat, a resident of McCulloch Street and community engagement manager at the nearby Bowling Green, has organised the fundraiser and jumble sale and is asking for donations.

The event will be kicking off at midday on Tuesday (June 8) and all money raised will go towards those affected by the fire, which tragically left one man dead. He has since been named by police as Rahul Thakur.

A GoFundMe page has so far raised £6,595 since being launched last week and is due to wrap up tomorrow following the fundraiser at the Bowling Green.

Tabassum said: "The plan is to make as much money from the donations of clothes, food and other items in order to raise money for the displaced families from the fire. The gofund will end tomorrow as well and all proceeds from our fundraiser will be added to the final amount.

"It will be exactly one week since the fire tomorrow and when the lives of so many families changed in a matter of hours. As the tragic circumstances around the fire unfold we must remember at the heart of this are the families that will need all the help they can get and that we are in a position to help in a meaningful way.

"Already our community has done so much however let's keep going and showing the rest of the UK what we do here in Pollokshields and Glasgow."

A 53-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of Mr Thakur in the fire.
