PATIALA: The voter turnout in the assembly segment of former Punjab CM and Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) supremo Capt Amarinder Singh was far less than the one in the constituency of incumbent CM and Congress candidate Charanjit Singh Channi’s seat. While Captain’s seat Patiala recorded a turnout of 63.58%, Channi’s seat Chamkaur Sahib got a voter turnout of 74.52%.
In Patiala, Capt contested the election against Congress’s Vishnu Sharma, SAD’s Harpal Juneja and AAP’s Ajit Pal Singh Kohli. Amarinder’s seat recorded the lowest turnout in Patiala district.
Channi contested against AAP’s Charanjit Singh and SAD’s Harmohan Singh Sandhu. Chamkaur Sahib had the highest turnout in Ropar district — higher than Ropar seat’s 73.84% and Anandpur Sahib seat’s 73.58%. In Patiala district, the voting trend in rural segments was recorded higher than urban areas.
In Patiala district, the voter turnout was 79.04% in Ghanaur, 77.05% in Nabha, 74.82% in Rajpura, 65.12% in Patiala Rural, 76.82% in Samana, 73.82% in Sanour, and 75.60% Shutrana.
In Ghanaur, Congress sitting MLA Madan Lal Jalalpur contested against AAP’s Gurlal Ghanaur, SAD’s former MP Prem Singh Chandumajra, BJP’s Vikas Sharma, and Prem Singh Bhangu, an independent candidate backed by farmers groups.
In Patiala Rural, cabinet minister and six-time MLA Brahm Mohindra’s son Mohit was the candidate for incumbent Congress.
