CHIBA -- A weather information provider in Chiba is busy preparing to deliver its pollen observation devices to about 1,000 selected observation spots across the country ahead of the peak season for allergy-inducing pollen.

Weathernews Inc. employees inspected the ball-shaped devices called Pollen Robo on Tuesday before sending them to companies and private homes that participate in the company's annual pollen observation network.

The devices are about 15 centimeters in diameter and have two lights resembling eyes that change to five hues: white, blue, yellow, red and purple, in order of increasing atmospheric pollen counts.

The observation data are automatically transferred, minute by minute, and users can check the hourly pollen count on the company's smartphone app or on relevant websites.
