A recent poll showed many Arizona voters say they don't know enough about Sen. John McCain's opponent.
An Arizona Republic/Morrison/Cronkite News poll released Wednesday showed that while 36 percent of respondents to the live telephone survey had a favorable or very favorable view of Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, 30.4 percent said they didn't know enough to answer or wouldn't answer.
Of McCain, 49 percent of respondents viewed him favorably or very favorably while 43.4 percent viewed him unfavorably or very unfavorably. Only 7.8 percent said they had no opinion or didn't answer.
The same poll, the first independent statewide poll this cycle, showed the presidential race as a tossup in the state with Democrat Hillary Clinton leading Republican Donald Trump by less than 2 points, well within its margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
More than half of Arizonans polled said they opposed Trump's proposed wall on the U.S.-Mexico border _ 55 percent said the U.S. should "maybe not" or "definitely not" build the wall.
They also opposed mass deportation of undocumented immigrants, another central issue of Trump's campaign, with 68 percent of respondents saying they either disagreed or strongly disagreed that the U.S. should deport all immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally.
Trump made a major speech on immigration in Phoenix last week, reiterating those positions.
