Sir Keir Starmer’s popularity has taken a nosedive—again—and this time it’s hit rock bottom. After a brief honeymoon period following Labour’s massive General Election win last year, where the party secured a whopping 174-seat majority, things have spiralled rapidly in the opposite direction.
A new YouGov poll has painted a grim picture for the Prime Minister, with his net favourability now at a painful 46%. That’s the worst rating he’s ever had. It’s not just a minor dip either—his approval rating has crashed by 12 points in just a month. This comes right after Labour’s drubbing in the local elections, where they shed hundreds of councillors and lost key battles to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, reported the Express.
Farage’s outfit didn’t just pinch a few seats—they bagged two mayoralties and even flipped Labour’s previously safe Runcorn and Helsby by-election, overturning a 14,696 majority. That’s not a wobble—it’s a full-blown political migraine for Labour.
But what might be most alarming for the PM is that the discontent isn’t just coming from the usual critics. According to YouGov, the slump is being driven by Labour’s own supporters. Half of Labour voters now have an unfavourable view of Starmer—a staggering 17-point jump from just a few weeks ago. His favourability among this group has dropped from 62% to 45% in a month. It’s the first time he’s underwater with his own base.
The backlash seems tied to a string of unpopular policy moves. Cuts to the winter fuel payment and disability benefits have gone down like a lead balloon, with big names like Diane Abbott and Ed Balls publicly slamming the decisions. Others in the party have taken issue with cuts to international aid and an increase in inheritance tax for farmers. It’s fair to say there’s no shortage of internal grumbling.
Only 23% of the public now have a positive view of Starmer. That puts him right back at the levels he saw in July 2021, when he was floundering in opposition and Boris Johnson was riding high after the Covid vaccine rollout.
Meanwhile, Nigel Farage is basking in a bit of a glow. His net favourability has jumped to its best-ever score, though to be fair, that still leaves six in ten Brits viewing him negatively. He’s at -27% now, up from -38% last month.
As for Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, the news isn’t much better. Her popularity continues to slip, with just 16% of people seeing her in a positive light. Her net favourability has dropped to -39%.
