Poll shows Irish people overwhelmingly support mandatory quarantine for travellers into country

The public want people travelling to Ireland to be forced to quarantine in a hotel for two weeks at their own expense, a new poll has revealed.

The study also found that 85% of those asked said they would take current and new vaccines if they are shown to be safe and effective.

And 70% believe pubs and restaurants should not be reopened until most of the population have been vaccinated 86%.

The findings of the Red C poll for the Sunday Business Post which shows that 86% of the public want a 14-day quarantine period in a hotel at their own expense for travellers arriving into Ireland will increase the pressure on authorities to impose stricter measures.

The Government is introducing limited measures which would force some travellers to stay in hotels for two weeks at their own expense - depending on where they came from - but has stopped short of introducing measures that would require all those entering the country to go into quarantine.

The poll found that 93% of Fianna Fail supporters back quarantine measures for all travellers which will add to the pressure on the Taoiseach to further tighten restrictions.

But Micheal Martin and his ministers will take some comfort from the disclosure that 85% of respondents would be willing to take a vaccine if proved to be safe.

It appears that the increasing number of cases has convinced the public that vaccinations are essential if the pandemic is to be brought under control.

The recent surge in the number of Covid-19 cases has hardened the public’s attitude against opening the country’s pubs and restaurants.

The latest poll found that 70% of those asked want both pubs and restaurants to remain closed until most of the population have been vaccinated.

In a similar study carried out by Red C for the Sunday Business Post last September 50% of people wanted the pubs to open and just 32% wanted the bars to remain closed.

When it comes to the prospect of the schools reopening in February 56% said they would agree if the cases of covid continues to fall while 38 percent are against.

When it came to the speed of the Government’s vaccine rollout 46% believed they were doing a good job while 47% felt they were not with seven percent saying they didn’t know.
