Poll results: Will you swear an oath of allegiance to the King?

Members of the public tuning in to watch King Charles’s Coronation will be asked to swear their allegiance to the monarch - but how did Mirror readers respond to the news?

During the ceremony on Saturday (May 6), the Archbishop of Canterbury will invite viewers to take part in the new Homage of the People, which has been described as a “great cry around the nation and around the world in support for the King”.

Before the oath is proclaimed, Most Reverend Justin Welby will say: “All persons of goodwill in The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of the other Realms and the Territories to make their homage, in heart and voice, to their undoubted King, defender of all".

The Coronation oath in full reads: "I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God."

This comes as a friend of the King suggested Charles would be horrified by the public pledging allegiance to him. Broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby, a close pal of the monarch, said the idea was “ill advised,” adding: “I can’t think of anything he would find more abhorrent.”

We asked Mirror readers if they would be swearing an oath of allegiance to the King, and 76 percent of respondents said ‘No’. A total of 5,866 took part in our poll, and around 4,433 said they won’t be taking part in the declaration.

Sharing their opinions in the comments section, one person wrote: “No I will not. Time to stop living in the past. What have they ever done for us? Shaken a few hands? I won't be watching the coronation and won't be singing the anthem either. Time these people were taken off their pedestals.”

Another penned: “Surely as upstanding citizens as most of us are, with no criminal records, living decent lives, working paying taxes etc., charity work many people engage in, being good neighbours etc etc., we already are giving allegiance to the country we live in. I am not a member of the church of England either, so no won't be swearing allegiance to the head of a religion I do not believe in.”

A third echoed: “They know exactly where they can stuff that "oath of allegiance"! As if anyone with a functioning brain would swear allegiance to the "Royal" scroungers. The whole sorry show is a waste of money and the "Royals'' don't pay a penny. Can't afford a pay rise for nurses but there's plenty of cash for the scroungers to put on a pompous show.”

And a fourth stated: “Time the royal soap opera was scrapped. Decent hard working all their lives pensioners in my street can't afford food and heating, yet we're blowing £250 million on this ego trip.”

Meanwhile, 24 percent of voters said they will be swearing their allegiance to King Charles. Taking to the comments, one reader stated: “Yes proud to be British and love the royal family, as all families we have members that don't act the way we would like them too, we have to take the good with the bad, the royal family do more for this country then a president does for their country.”

A second added: “I voted yes ..King Charles and Queen Camila will be great for the United Kingdom, I will be sitting in front of my TV cheering the royal family on.”

“Yes, I have always loved the Royal family, especially our King. Long live our noble King,” wrote a third.

Another shared: “Of course I voted yes, anybody who does not should be exiled for absolute treason. They should be ashamed of themselves for pandering to left wing liberals.”

While a fifth person said: “Yes because I would rather stick with the monarchy than risk electing a trump,” as another stated: “I will be as will my son who is in the armed forces. GOD SAVE THE KING!”

A number of users described the Coronation as a “waste of taxpayers money”, while others suggested “millions of pounds will be made from tourists just here to watch” the historic event.
