A recent poll conducted among US adults has revealed interesting insights into the opinions of Democrats and Republicans regarding their respective party's presidential candidates. The poll, which surveyed 1,2532 individuals from July 11 to 15, found that a significant majority of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents believe that President Joe Biden should withdraw from the race and allow his party to select a different candidate. Specifically, 65% of Democrats expressed this sentiment, while only 35% believe Biden should continue running for president.
On the other hand, the poll indicated that approximately three-quarters of Republican-aligned adults (73%) support former President Donald Trump continuing his presidential campaign. However, despite this, majorities of the overall public expressed a desire for both candidates to drop out.
Notably, there are racial and age divides within the Democratic party regarding Biden's candidacy. While a majority of Black Democrats are split on the issue, with 50% in favor of Biden continuing and 49% in favor of his withdrawal, Hispanic Democrats (64%) and White Democrats (67%) lean towards wanting him to step aside. Additionally, there is a significant generational gap among Democrats, with 57% of those aged 45 and older advocating for Biden's withdrawal, compared to 75% among those younger than 45.
Despite these divisions, most Democrats (70%) still view Biden favorably. However, there has been a notable increase in the percentage of Democrats expressing concerns about Biden's mental capacity to serve effectively as president, with 48% now feeling not very or not at all confident in this regard. Furthermore, dissatisfaction with Biden as the nominee has also risen, with 48% expressing discontent, up from 38% in a previous survey.
While Democrats generally believe that Biden holds advantages over Trump in terms of honesty, having the right vision for the country, and crisis management capabilities, only 37% of Democrats feel that Biden is more capable than Trump of winning the 2024 election.
