The Kansas City Chiefs have added 19 undrafted free agents from the 2019 class to the 90-man offseason roster.
That number makes up nearly one-fifth of the Chiefs’ 90-man roster. In the past the Chiefs have been heavily reliant on undrafted free agents to round out their roster. There will almost certainly be several that go on to make the 10-man practice squad, but it varies each year how many UDFAs will survive roster cuts.
In 2018, the Chiefs opened the season with three undrafted free agents making the 53-man roster. Those players were linebacker Ben Niemann, running back Darrel Williams and cornerback Charvarius Ward. By the end of the season they’d added another in tight end Deon Yelder.
With the 2019 season on the horizon, the Chiefs have a fresh batch of undrafted free agents. They will go through the trials and rigors on the 2019 offseason with the hopes of making the team. It’s been done in the past and the Chiefs routinely reward top performers with opportunities to make the team.
This season they have several players at key positions of need. They’ve got four different cornerbacks who are all potentially fighting for one roster spot. Clemson’s Mark Fields might be the favorite there because of his pedigree, but don’t sleep on Jalin Burrell or Herb Miller.
There are some players on the offensive side of the ball that are intriguing too like Washington State HB James Williams and Princeton QB-TE convert John Lovett. The Chiefs will likely have to narrow down a number of options.
