Poll: Clinton leads by double digits in Virginia

WASHINGTON _ A new poll shows Donald Trump trailing Hillary Clinton by double digits in Virginia as independents turn toward the Democratic presidential nominee.

Clinton leads in Virginia with 45 percent of likely voters compared to 33 percent backing Trump, the poll from the Judy Ford Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University showed.

While the poll showed Trump rebounding slightly from a low point after the "Access Hollywood" video came out, it also showed independents turning away from Libertarian Gary Johnson and toward Clinton and her running mate, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine. She now has 44 percent support among independents compared to 21 percent in September, the poll showed.

The poll also showed a split between the northern part of the state, which includes the Washington, D.C., suburbs, and the south, with Clinton leading in the north, 57 percent to 21 percent, and Trump leading in the south, 51 percent to 30 percent.

The poll, conducted from Sunday to Wednesday, before Wednesday's third and final presidential debate, interviewed 834 likely voters in Virginia. It had a margin of error of 3.9 percent.
