Politics Weekly podcast: Saving the world with Gordon Brown – and Oliver Postgate

This week we ask whether the prime minister's remark at PMQs that he "saved the world" was a Freudian slip. Political correspondent Allegra Stratton thinks he can't possibly think he can save the world.

We ask where the recession leaves the pre-election battle between the main parties after David Cameron confirmed that the Tories will cut public spending faster than Labour. Leader writer Tom Clark thinks that both parties have moved to the right.

And we mark the death this week of Oliver Postgate, the creator of Bagpuss, the Clangers and Ivor the Engine. Postgate was also something of a serious political blogger. Senior political correspondent Andrew Sparrow thinks his soup dragon may have been a parable for dispensing welfare.

And Simon Hoggart, the Guardian's parliamentary sketchwriter, describes the scenes in the House of Commons where the subject of the recession this week provided an opportunity for the party leaders to try to outsmart each other.
