Politics Weekly podcast: Lords reform and a Paxo stuffing

More than a century after the Parliament Act of 1911, Nick Clegg has decided to have another crack at bringing a little more democracy to the House of Lords. His plan involves a slimmed down roll-call of 450 senators who would sit part time and - for the first time - stand for election.

The concept of reforming the upper house has high-profile support - all three main parties backed it in their manifestos. But even the bill's most ardent supporters are far from confident it will prevail. With Conservative and Labour backbenchers determined to shoot it down, this issue could still be a live one in another 101 years' time.

In the studio to discuss this with Tom Clark are the Observer's political editor Toby Helm, Guardian social affairs editor Randeep Ramesh and political commentator Anne Perkins.

Also on the agenda this week: David Cameron's welfare speech in which he suggested that a future Tory government would crack down harder on the benefits claimed by people under 25.

And after yet another u-turn on this year's budget (this time on the unpopular hike in fuel duty) George Osborne left the defence of the policy to his most junior minister, Chloe Smith, who duly became Jeremy Paxman's latest victim on the BBC's Newsnight.
