Politics Weekly podcast: Liam Fox clings to office

Defence secretary Liam Fox is fighting to save his cabinet career after he admitted blurring the lines between his private life and public office.

Guardian reporter Rupert Neate was the first to break the story, which eventually revealed the extent of the involvement of Fox's friend Adam Werritty in the defence secretary's foreign visits.

As Fox refuses to bow to pressure on him to resign, we consider whether there was ever a golden age of principled ministerial resignations. Columnist Anne Perkins and social affairs editor Randeep Ramesh are doubtful.

Also this week, the controversial health and social care bill reaches the House of Lords. Campaigners had hoped that an amendment geared towards slowing down the passage of the bill would squeak through. In the event, it failed and the shake-up in the NHS moves ever-closer.

And we hear from Scotland correspondent Severin Carrell ahead of the SNP's party conference this weekend.

First minister Alex Salmond is considering offering a compromise option in the referendum on independence (which he's promised to hold before 2015). But will Scotland's future in the United Kingdom ultimately rest on the fate of the world economy? Another major crash, and independence could be off the agenda for a generation.
