Politics Weekly podcast: Horsemeat, social care and the papal election

The story of the contamination of many supermarket beef products with horsemeat has kept headline writers amused - but it also lifts the lid on the global food trade. For many the secret of what goes into their lasagne will have spoiled it forever. But how much can politicians do to "get a grip" on such scandals. Is food packaging really under-regulated? And are people really willing to pay more money for higher quality meat?

On the panel this week: columnist Polly Toynbee, reporter Shiv Malik and from the Policy Exchange thinktank, Sean Worth.

Also this week: who should pay for social care for the elderly? The government has resisted a full implementation of economist Andrew Dilnot's recommendations - but Jeremy Hunt has signaled that he intends to push for a budget version. Under the proposals, individual contributions to long term care would be capped at £75,000.

Plus: a ruling in the infamous Poundland case went against the government this week. We look at the implications for so-called 'workfare' programmes.

And finally we delve into the murky world of Vatican politics as the campaigns to become the next pope are under way - in secret.
