Politics Weekly podcast: Damian Green, the Queen and Mandelson to the rescue

We turn our attention to the Queen's speech and Gordon Brown's offer of help for people with mortgage payments during the downturn. We also challenge three of the Guardian's finest to justify this newspaper's republicanism after another magnificent performance by Her Maj, known as Brenda to readers of Private Eye.

Joining Nick Watt around the table is Will Woodward, the Guardian's head of politics. Will says it is wrong to talk about a constitutional crisis after the Speaker's criticism of the police. But Will says that serious mistakes were made.

Martin Kettle, the Guardian columnist, praises the mortgage announcement. But Martin believes the prime minister will struggle to win the next election. Martin advises Brown to read every word of Lord Mandelson's Hugo Young lecture this week to discover the next chapter of New Labour.

Allegra Stratton, the Guardian's political correspondent, offers half-hearted support for the monarchy. Allegra says that we are all "Elizabethists" and that King Charles III will be in trouble when he ascends the throne. Republican Will calls for President Gary Lineker to take over.

Finally Simon Hoggart, the Guardian's parliamentary sketchwriter, describes the scenes in the House of Commons when the Speaker made his statement. He also reports about how the Queen heroically battled to deliver her annual speech with a cold.
