Rishi Sunak is seeking to fast track his new small boats laws through Parliament, with MPs due to vote on the draft legislation for the first time next week.

MPs will debate and vote on the Illegal Migration Bill on Monday evening, less than a week after the Government unveiled its latest plan to tackle the migrant Channel crossings crisis.

Downing Street confirmed at lunchtime that the Prime Minister wants the Bill to make it onto the statute book as "swiftly" as possible.

Asked if No10 was expediting the passage of the legislation, the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman said: "Certainly we are doing it as swiftly and thoroughly as possible. We think it's a vital piece of legislation."

Labour has said its MPs will be whipped to vote against the Bill but with no Tory revolt over the proposals it should easily sail through the Commons before facing further scrutiny in the House of Lords.

The Bill will enable the Government to detain and swiftly deport people who arrive in the UK on small boats. Critics have claimed the proposals, which will almost certainly be challenged in the courts, are unworkable.
