Politics in Wales today: Members of the Senedd continue inquiry into debt

Good morning, and welcome to Monday.

Today, the Senedd's equality and social justice committee will meet and continue to hear its debt inquiry.

The committee is undertaking a short inquiry into the impact of the pandemic on levels of indebtedness, with a particular focus on personal, household and consumer debt. Evidence will be given by Shelter Cymru, Community Housing Cymru and the Welsh Local Government Association among an afternoon of evidence being taken.

The Commons remains in recess, however the Conservative conference continues in Manchester.

What else is happening today?

  • The Senedd’s equality and social justice committee meets to continue its debt inquiry. Evidence is being taken from charities including Chwarae Teg, Ethnic Minorities and Youth Support Team Wales as well as Credit Unions Wales

  • The Conservative party conference continues in Manchester

  • Virginia Crosbie, MP for Ynys Môn will chair a fringe event on nuclear "powering and levelling up in Wales"

  • The chancellor Rishi Sunak will speak at 11.50am and Michael Gove at 2pm - both on the main stage

There are meetings in the Senedd in Cardiff Bay between Monday and Thursday. On Tuesdays and Wednesday there are meetings of the whole Senedd, known as plenary, which usually start at 1.30pm. Due to the pandemic a hybrid model is in place where up to 30 of the 60 MSs will meet in person but the rest via videolink.

Committees, where MSs take evidence about specific issues or grill ministers, take place every day.

Welsh MPs take part in proceedings in London during the week too. The House sits from Monday afternoon, usually until Thursday.
