Politicians pleads with St Johnstone fans to stick to the rules over cup final weekend

A Perthshire MP has pleaded with St Johnstone fans not to gather in large numbers to celebrate the club being in the Scottish Cup final.

Pete Wishart said people should still avoid meeting up with more people than is permitted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

With Perth and Kinross in level two of COVID restrictions, people can currently meet in groups of six people from three households in your home or theirs ; six people from three households in an indoor public place like a café, pub or restaurant; or eight people from eight households outdoors.

It comes after thousands of Rangers fans celebrated in Glasgow’s George Square when their club lifted the Premiership trophy last Saturday.

The Perth and North Perthshire MP said: “I am absolutely thrilled that St Johnstone have reached the Scottish Cup Final and I will be glued to the match like much of Perthshire. I don’t want to put a dampener on the weekend, but I want to remind people that they should continue to follow all of the public health advice, to ensure that we maintain our relatively low levels of the virus.

"People should not attend large gatherings and anyone in doubt should visit www.gov.scot for a reminder of the current rules.

“I do not underestimate the excitement and the significance of this weekend for Saints fans, but I would just urge a bit of common sense to ensure we do not endanger our fellow fans, friends and families.

“I hope that Saints fans across Perthshire, and indeed globally, will be able to enjoy the match whilst still following all public health measures.

“I wish the club all the best, and I hope that we will be celebrating a second Scottish Cup Final win.”
