Sayeeda Warsi tells Steph's Packed Lunch she'd 'rather resist arrest' than go with a lone police officer

A Yorkshire-born top politican has said she would rather 'resist arrest' than risk getting in a car with a lone male police officer at night.

Sayeeda Warsi told TV show Steph's Packed Lunch that she would rather break the law than risk her safety.

The Dewsbury-born Conservative peer said: "If I am now approached late at night, by a police officer on his own, and I have concerns I would rather resist arrest than comply with the law and get into a car."

It comes after the sentencing of Wayne Couzens - the Met police officer who abducted, raped and murdered Sarah Everard. He has been handed a whole life tariff and will die in prison for his crimes.

Baroness Warsi said that the "slightest hint" that someone doesn't have the have the character to protect people means they shouldn't be in positions of power - like the indecent exposure concerns that had been raised about Couzens.

She said Sarah had got into Couzens' car "in plain sight" because people in the UK are taught to trust the police.

"But what this case has shown is that despite the police knowing there were concerns he was still allowed to be put in a position of trust where he was supposed to be protecting."

The case could bring a long-term break down in trust in the police and people in authority, she added.
