Alice Springs politician Joshua Burgoyne has been hit with criminal charges after a car accident hospitalised two healthcare workers.

The Country Liberal Party's opposition whip confirmed he had been charged with careless driving occasioning serious harm on Monday.

Mr Burgoyne made a short statement to media in Alice Springs after rumours on Friday and over the weekend.

"In August last year my wife and I were involved in a traffic accident," he said on Monday.

"At that time I was told those taken to hospital were as a matter of precaution... (and) since then I had not heard anything further about the accident and had no reason to believe there would be any actions taken."

Mr Burgoyne said police called him in early February and told him he would be charged in relation to the incident.

He said he would now follow the process through the courts with the help of legal advice and could not take any more questions.

Mr Burgoyne's wife was heavily pregnant at the time and was uninjured in the crash.

WorkSafe NT said it was investigating the crash involving two health workers who were returning to Alice Springs from a remote community.

"Two health care workers were injured in the incident and were treated in Alice Springs Hospital," a spokesman said.

"The occupant and actions of the other vehicle is currently not the focus of NT WorkSafe's inquiry.

"Potential breaches of the Northern Territory's road rules is under the jurisdiction of NT Police."

NT Police could not confirm the identity of the offender but said a 34-year-old man was involved in a crash in December last year where the "vehicle travelling outbound failed to give way".

He is set to appear in Darwin local court on March 4.

The 34-year-old is the member for Braitling, encompassing the north-western part of Alice Springs.

He was elected to parliament for the Country Liberal Party at the 2020 NT election.

Territorians will hit the polls again in August when the Labor government attempts to win another term in office.
