A politician has called for a clampdown on the Kinahan cartel and its associates after the attempted murder of a journalist.
Peter R de Vries, who has been widely lauded for his fearless reporting on the Dutch underworld, was shot up to five times in Amsterdam on Tuesday evening. He remains in hospital fighting for his life.
Police believe Dutch Moroccan crime lord Ridouan Taghi - who attended mob boss Daniel Kinahan's Dubai wedding in 2017 - and his gang were behind the attack.
De Vries was providing support to the state witness in a trial where Taghi and 16 of his associates are accused of seven murders and drug trafficking.
Russell Findlay, a Tory MSP, lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament this week paying tribute to De Vries.
But he also said that Taghi is closely aligned to the Kinahan mob and a major Scottish criminal.
Findlay, a former journalist himself, said: "Over the past 15 years, at least one Scottish organised crime group has forged alliances with both the Taghi and Kinahan international drug trafficking gangs.
"The leader of the Glasgow-based gang fled Scotland for his own safety 15 years ago and ended up in Marbella where these connections were made and have flourished.
"Peter R de Vries was targeted because he was effectively exposing and disrupting these cowardly criminals.
"It should concern everyone that a journalist in a western European democracy can be targeted by organised crime.
"I have lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament paying tribute to his courage and urging the authorities to crack down on these gangs.
"I hope that Mr de Vries makes a full recovery and that those responsible are brought to justice."
