Political rival slams Leeds councillor and urges him to resign after he went to a party during lockdown

There are calls for a Leeds Labour councillor to resign after he broke lockdown rules to attend a party.

Cllr Arif Hussain, who represents Harehills and Gipton, was pictured at an indoor event with people he does not live with earlier this week.

He apologised but is now facing criticism from political rival Shafique Sheikh who says the breach undermines the work done in the Harehills community to ensure people are sticking to the government guidelines.

Harehills faced criticism at the beginning of the enforced lockdown after pictures surfaced showing people ignoring social distancing rules.

Mr Sheikh, who is the Social Democratic Party candidate for Gipton and Harehills, said: “What he has done has really messed up the great work people have been doing in the area.

“How can a sitting councillor for more than 10 years make this mistake knowing full well that his party has been hounding Dominic Cummings. Is he really that detached from reality?

“Harehills has been the foot of lockdown jokes since lockdown started and then this councillor decides to do break the rules.”

The council's Labour leader Judith Blake condemned the breach, telling a press conference that she was concerned by a rise in people breaking the rules generally.

She said: “Cllr Hussain recognised immediately how serious his actions were.

“He’s apologised to us as the council and made a broader apology to the public."

Cllr Arif Hussain who has stepped down as chair of inner east community committee said: “I’m sincerely sorry for my actions it was a breach of the lockdown rules and it should not have happened. I apologise to all the residents of Leeds who are enduring lockdown with such good grace and to everyone who is working so hard to keep people safe and our public services running.”

A Labour spokesperson has said: "Leeds Labour group acted swiftly to deal with this issue and his actions are being investigated by the party."
