Polish soldiers armed with machine guns invade Czech Republic by mistake

Bungling Polish soldiers armed with machine guns invade Czech Republic in a hapless "misunderstanding".

The troops prevented Czech visitors from accessing a chapel near Moravia during the occupation, which reportedly lasted several days.

When a construction worker overseeing repairs at the chapel wanted to take photographs of the plaster, the soldiers turned him away. They, according to reports, formed a roadblock on the path leading to the building, believing they were on the Poland side of the border - a small stream.

All religious buildings, including chapels, are closed in both countries due to the coronavirus lockdown.

But Czech authorities eventually contacted Warsaw and the soldiers returned.

"The placement of the border post was a result of misunderstanding, not a deliberate act. It was corrected immediately and the case was resolved - also by the Czech side," the Polish Ministry of Defence told CNN.

The construction company eventually dispatched a worker to the site, which is approximately 30 metres from the border.

It is unknown how or why the soldiers found themselves on the Czech side of the stream last month.

But they stopped other guests trying to travel down the path, including a group of environmentalists.

Speaking to local media, the movement's local co-ordinator, Ivo Dokoupil said: "A soldier dressed in the uniform of a foreign state and carrying a sub-machine gun started giving me orders. It was a terrifying experience.

"They wouldn't let me get closer than 10 metres."

It is understood police eventually intervened. However, the Czech government has yet to comment on the misunderstanding.

Poland borders six other countries, including Germany and Lithuania.
