Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska continues fairytale run to reach French Open final

  • Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska booked her place in the French Open final by beating Russia’s Diana Shnaider on Thursday.
  • Chwalinska has been on a dream run at Roland Garros after coming through qualifying, but faced a tough task against Shnaider, who knocked out World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the previous round.
  • Chwalinska took the opening set on a tie-break, and the second set was also a close affair.
  • In the end, it was Chwalinska who held her nerve as she completed a 7-6, 6-4 win to move within one win of her maiden grand slam title.
  • Chwalinska is now set to play her third straight Russian opponent, as she will face Mirra Andreeva in the final, after the teenager beat Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk earlier on Thursday.
