Polisario Front leader Brahim Ghali, who had been hospitalized in the Spanish city of Logrono since April 18 to be treated for coronavirus, was expected to leave Spain on Tuesday evening.

“Ghali was planning on leaving the country on Tuesday evening, flying in a civilian plane from Pamplona airport,” the Spanish foreign ministry said in a statement.

It said he used the same documentation with which he had first entered the country.

Spain’s El Pais newspaper said Ghali was planning to fly to Algeria from Pamplona at 1:40 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

The announcement by Madrid came just hours after a Spanish judge declined to order that Ghali, who is under investigation in Spain for torture and genocide, be taken into custody.

Ghali denied the allegations against him as he testified by video conference from hospital.
