Policeman pal of cop mascot Shiny Buttons dies aged 100

A former Paisley policeman who was famous among schoolkids as the pal of Shiny Buttons has died aged 100.

Robert ‘Bobby’ Badger joined the force in the days of Paisley Burgh and served in the traffic department.

Shiny Buttons was the Strathclyde Police Force’s mascot which helped teach schoolchildren all about road safety back in the 1970s and 80s.

Robert was well-known as the pal of Shiny Buttons, who would tour schools with him.

A spokesperson for the Renfrew and Dumbarton retired police officers branch said: “Bobby was instrumental in the operation of the ‘Shiny Buttons’ road safety project for kids.

“Some of the artefacts of this enterprise were given to the Transport Museum, Glasgow.

“We are sad to hear of his passing and our thoughts are with his family at this time.”

A member of Cochrane Castle Golf Club, Robert lived in Paisley for many years before moving to South Lanarkshire.

Robert was the beloved husband of the late Phyllis, a much loved father to Robert and Patricia and a devoted grandfather and great grandfather.

He passed away at Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride last month after a short illness.
