Policeman feared his eyeball would "pop" after teen smashed phone in his eye

A police officer told a court he thought his eyeball had "popped" when a teenager he tried to help smashed his eye with a mobile phone.

PC Luke Finney said Fernanda Perry attacked him he immediately lost vision in his left eye.

In a statement to Bristol Crown Court he said: "I genuinely thought my eyeball had popped. Thankfully my vision returned for the most part and the injury will likely diminish."

Perry, 18, of Hartcliffe Road in Knowle, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on June 1.

Judge William Hart handed her a six months prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

He told her: "If you think about doing something like this again remember how you felt when you walked into the dock and sat there.

"It is not something you want to come back to."

The judge told Perry not to re-offend and gave her a tagged three-month curfew in which she must stay at home from 9pm to 9am.

She was also told to pay £500 compensation to the officer.

Meabh McGee, prosecuting, said PC Finney tried to help Perry when she appeared distressed in Bristol on June 1 and she lashed out at him.

After kicking him she punched him to his eye while holding her mobile phone, the court heard.

In his statement to the court the police officer said: "I felt I made myself very clear I was there to help.

"I could have placed her in handcuffs.

"I gave her the benefit of the doubt and tried to treat her with a dignity which, unfortunately, was not reciprocated.

"It was entirely preventable."

Ranjit Bains, defending, said his client was immediately remorseful for her out of character behaviour.

He told the court: "She said she felt regret.

"She sincerely apologised for her actions."

He told the court Perry had been made redundant from her hairdressing job, due to the coronavirus pandemic, and is expecting a baby in April next year.
