Policeman, 39, found dead with son, 3, had 'returned home early from family holiday'

A serving police officer and his toddler son who were found dead had returned home early from holiday.

Detective Constable David Louden, who worked for West Mercia Police, was found dead at a property in Cairndu Drive, Kidderminster with his three-year-old son Harrison on Friday after worried relatives contacted police and asked them to check on him.

West Mercia Police say the deaths are being treated as "unexplained."

A neighbour said the pair had been away on holiday with David's wife and another relative but the trip was cut short.

It appears only father and son had returned to the house before concerns for safety were raised and the bodies were found on Friday morning.

Door-to-door police enquiries have focused on events inside the house the previous evening.

West Mercia Police have released no further details of how the father and son died and it is not known if post-mortem examinations have yet been carried out.

On Sunday, a photograph of Dave and Harrison was released by police alongside a tribute from their wife and mother, Mrs Louden, who also works for the police as an officer.

David was described as a "David was a kind, loving, considerate, amazing father, husband, son, brother, uncle, friend and colleague" in a tribute from his wife (davelouden/Facebook)

In the statement, she said: "David was a kind, loving, considerate, amazing father, husband, son, brother, uncle, friend and colleague. Harrison was a happy, well-loved little boy. They will both be forever missed and loved."

Many have paid tribute to David and Harrison over the weekend and floral tributes have been left outside their home.

One message, accompanied with a bouquet and soft plush elephant toy, read: "Rest in peace, sleep well. In our thoughts and prayers."

Another read: "To family and friends. So sorry for your loss - we're all thinking of you. My heart goes out to you all, it's such a tragedy. Both lives gone too soon."

The West Mercia Police Federation issued a statement following the sad deaths.

Sarah Cooper, branch chair, said: “We are all deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic and heart-breaking news. We extend our deepest sympathies to all those impacted by this devastating incident and our thoughts are very much with family, friends and colleagues.

“The ripples from this incident will be far-reaching and I know that officers and staff across West Mercia Police will be impacted hugely by this tragedy.

“As a Federation, we will be on hand to support our members through this in any way we can.”

West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner, John Campion, also offered his condolences to the family affected by the deaths.

He said: "My thoughts are with the family affected, and West Mercia Police Officers and staff who are having to come to terms with this terrible news."
