Police working with other forces to identify body found washed-up on Tynemouth beach

Police are working with other forces to discover if a body found washed-up on a Tyneside beach could be a missing person from outside the area.

It has now been almost six weeks since the remains of a man were found at Tynemouth Longsands. But his identity is still unknown.

Officers from Northumbria Police are today awaiting the results of forensics tests that may help them identify the body.

And they are working with neighbouring police forces to determine whether he could be a missing person from outside the area.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “We can confirm enquiries are ongoing to identify the body and trace the next of kin.

"Our investigation has involved a number of forensic tests and we are currently awaiting the result of some of those enquiries.

"We have also been liaising with neighbouring forces to identify whether the body could be a missing person who is not local to the area.”

The remains were discovered at shortly after 6am on Saturday, October 17.

Police were called and a number of uniformed officers could be seen close to the ramp on the south side of the beach.
