Police 'won't knock on doors at Christmas' as PM axes bubbles under Tier 4 restrictions

Police 'won't be knocking on doors' on Christmas Day after 'baffling' new restrictions saw festive bubbles axed.

Metropolitan Police Federation boss Ken Marsh slammed the new Tier 4 restrictions as 'baffling' after the were announced yesterday.

Speaking to MailOnline, Mr Marsh said Boris Johnson had 'lost the good will of the people' over Christmas after breaking promises.

The new rules saw fifteen million people plunged into stricter Covid-19 restrictions at midnight today, with Christmas shopping banned and Brits told to stay at home by law.

Christmas bubbles were also scrapped for a third of the population of England who entered the new 'Tier 4'.

And Christmas bubbles have been shortened from five days to just one - Christmas Day - for the rest of the country.

Speaking to MailOnline, Ken Marsh said: "It doesn’t make sense. It’s going to be no different now from how it was.

"We’re not going to be knocking on people's doors on Christmas Day. We have no power of entry. It’s just a shame because I don’t think people are going to take much notice.

"You’ve lost the goodwill of the public. They’re so frustrated."

The new rules come as a new, more easily transmitted strain of Covid-19 tore through London and the South East - responsible for 60% of new cases in the capital.

When non-essential shops closed yesterday in the new Tier 4 areas, they were told they must stay closed for two weeks.

And from today, people in Tier 4 will be ordered to stay at home unless performing outdoor exercise, shopping for essentials, and for medical, education and childcare purposes.
