Police: Woman attempted to board ferry with 250 bags of heroin

A New Jersey woman attempting to board the Cape May-Lewes ferry was allegedly found with 250 bags of heroin in her bag, Delaware River and Bay Authority police said Tuesday.

As The Press of Atlantic City reports, Dawn Corcoran, 45, of Lower Township tried to board a ferry to Lewes, Del., from the North Cape May terminal in New Jersey on Oct. 1 at about 2:30 p.m. Before boarding, DRBA police Pfc. David Santiago attempted to search Corcoran's bag as part of a security screening.

When Santiago began to search Corcoran's purse, she reportedly grabbed it back and made an attempt to run into the women's bathroom. Corcoran later consented to a search of her belongings, which turned up a tight, rectangular bundle wrapped in black tape.

Corcoran initially claimed that the bundle was a phone charger, but later admitted that "you got me, it's drugs ... it's heroin," police said.

Police charged Corcoran with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to distribute, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance within 500 feet of a public park. She also was changed with violating her parole.

Corcoran was taken to Cape May County Jail with bail set at $50,000.
