Police will take no action over Nottinghamshire MP Lee Anderson's Eddie Izzard remarks

The Metropolitan Police have said they will take no further action after a Nottinghamshire MP's comments on Eddie Izzard were reported for allegedly being transphobic. Ashfield MP Lee Anderson was reported by an Ashfield councillor over his comments on the comedian and activist during an interview on TalkTV on Wednesday, October 26.

David Hennigan, an Ashfield Independent, said he believed a hate crime had been committed by the Conservative MP. However, a spokesman for the Met Police told Nottinghamshire Live that no offences had been identified.

"On Thursday, 27 October we received a complaint in relation to comments made during a television interview given on College Green, Westminster on Wednesday, 26 October," he said. "The complaint has been assessed and no offences have been identified. As a result no further action will be taken."

Discussing Eddie Izzard's self-identification as a woman and her campaign to become a Labour MP in Sheffield, Mr Anderson questioned whether the comedian's election as an MP would "increase or decrease" female representation in Parliament. "I'm not sure what he's all about, Keir Starmer's not sure what he's all about," he said, referring to Ms Izzard.

Speaking previously to Nottinghamshire Live, Mr Anderson described councillor Hennigan's report as a "waste of police time". Eddie Izzard has since told Mr Anderson and other MPs who have criticised her self-identification to "join the 21st century".
