Delays after students assaulted by cyclist

Police say they were not told about a cyclist who attacked four children at Canberra's Marist College, despite the school saying it made contact on the same day.

The man, who was riding a mountain bike, began yelling and swearing at the children while they were participating in the event off of school grounds, before deliberately running four students down.

The cyclist also ran over one boy's foot.

The attack happened on the morning of April 13, but police told the ABC they had first been notified on the afternoon of April 17.

However Marist said the school contacted police hours after the attack, only to be told that parents should instead make the report.

One mother is understood to have contacted police on the Sunday after the incident.

A police spokesman said school holidays prevented officers from questioning some students and staff until early May.

Marist headmaster Matthew Hutchinson said in a statement the school had offered counselling to affected students.

"I can confirm on the last day of term one there was an incident involving a member of the public, who randomly rode his bike targeting a group of students," he said.

"One boy was injured, requiring medical attention.

"Counselling and ongoing support have been offered, and the police have been informed."

The man who attacked the children is described as having white skin and a light beard, and being between 25 and 30 years old.

Witnesses say he was thin and had a deep voice, and was wearing shorts, a grey singlet and cap.

He was riding a maroon mountain bike.

ACT Policing's investigation into the assaults is ongoing.
