Police watchdog to probe crash after car smashed into house during cop chase

A car that crashed into a home and caught fire had been involved in a police chase, it has been confirmed.

Three men, aged 22, 32, and 36, were seriously injured in the crash on the A857 in Lewis, Outer Hebrides, on Saturday morning.

A 61-year-old woman in the house was safely removed by police.

The police watchdog will now look into the incident .

A Police Scotland spokesman said: " Police can confirm the vehicle was involved in an earlier pursuit that morning.

"As such, in line with the standard procedure, the incident has been reported to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner ( Pirc )."

A spokesman for the commissioner's investigation team said: "As is standard procedure, Police Scotland have referred to the Pirc the circumstances of an incident in the early hours of Saturday November 23 on the Isle of Lewis.

"We are now carrying out an assessment to determine whether a full investigation is required."

The blue Vauxhall Zafira hit the home near the junction with the A858, known as Barvas Corner , around 1.30am on Saturday.

A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with road traffic offences.
