The driver of a car that crashed into a building during a police chase in Burnage is still in hospital.

Two young men inside the vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries in the horror smash on Sunday night.

One of the passengers, Deon Simpson, 17, from Gorton, died.

The driver of the vehicle, believed to be another teenager, remains in hospital.

The crash happened at the junction of Burnage Lane and Lane End Road after police attempted to stop the car at around 9.25pm.

A referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) on Monday.

"The driver of the vehicle remains in hospital. Our thoughts remain with all those affected by this incident.”

The day after the crash, a teenager was stabbed during a fight at a vigil held in Deon's memory near to the crash scene.

Police were called to reports of a brawl on Burnage Lane shortly after 6.50pm on Monday (October 4).

An 18-year-old was stabbed in the shoulder.

He was taken to hospital. Police said he is in a stable condition.

The teenager stabbed on Monday night is believed to have been one of Deon's friends - and a pal of the other person injured in the horror smash on Sunday.
