An investigation has been launched into the death of a man who passed away after being released from Police Scotland custody.
The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner have announced they are examining the actions and decision-making of officers involved in the man’s arrest and liberation.
The 51-year-old passed away after being released from custody in Dundee on February 22.
A report will be submitted to the Crown Office, who called for the probe, in due course.
A PIRC statement said: “We have been directed by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) to investigate the death of a 51-year-old man who died after being released from police custody in Dundee on 22 February 2021.
“Our investigation will focus on the actions and decision-making of officers from when the man was arrested until he was released.
“Once our investigation is concluded, a report with our findings will be submitted to the COPFS for consideration.”
A Police spokesperson said: “Around 9.30pm on 21 February, 2021, officers were called to a report of a man attempting to break into a property in Newburgh, Cupar. Officers attended and a 51-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.”
In response to the PIRC referral, the spokesperson said: "We are aware of the referral to PIRC and therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further."
