An investigation has been launched after a man died shortly after being arrested at a hotel

Police were called to Edgerton Hotel in Huddersfield at 6am on 4 December after reports of a disturbance.

Officers arrested a 37-year-old man, who has not been named, on suspicion of drug offences.

Concerns were raised about the man's health, who was then rushed to hospital, where he died shortly afterwards.

An investigation has been launched by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) into how West Yorkshire Police handled their response.

In a statement the IPOC said: "We are investigating the contact between West Yorkshire Police and a 37-year-old man arrested at a hotel in Huddersfield.

"His next of kin has been informed. We will not be naming the man who has died at this time.

"We sent investigators to the scene and the post-incident procedures to gather initial evidence, such as accounts from the officers involved and any witnesses."

Miranda Biddle, the IOPC's regional director, said: "We have a duty to investigate incidents where someone has died following police contact. Our work is at an early stage."

A cordon remains around the hotel as investigations continue.
