Police watchdog launch probe into death of man who jumped in River Clyde after running from cops

The police investigations and review commissioner has launched a probe into the after running from a police incident.

The Scots police watchdog confirmed an investigation has been launched after the body of a 31-year-old man was pulled from the river on Thursday morning.

Officers were called to a disturbance in Clyde Street near the Euro Hostel, in Glasgow city centre, at around 4.15am on Thursday.

When police arrived a man was seen running along Clyde Street before jumping into the River Clyde by the South Portland Street Suspension Bridge.

Several rescue attempts were made by officers and emergency services but they were unable to do so.

The body of a 31-year-old man was recovered a short time later.

Police were unable to confirm the circumstances surrounding the disturbance.

A spokesperson for the PIRC’s Investigation Team said: “We are carrying out an investigation following the death of a 31-year-old man whose body was recovered from the River Clyde in Glasgow on Wednesday 4 July 2019.   

“The incident was referred to us by the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) and a report will be submitted to them in due course.”

A police spokeswoman said: "Around 4.15am this morning, police were called to a disturbance in Clyde Street, Glasgow .

"On arrival, a man was seen running off along Clyde Street before jumping into the water near to the suspension bridge.

"Officers, assisted by other emergency services, tried to rescue the man but were unable to do so.

"His body has since been recovered. Inquiries are continuing and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal."

The coastguard and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) also attended.

A SFRS spokesman said: "The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called at 4.20am on Thursday July 4 to assist emergency service partners at Clyde Street, Glasgow.

"Operations control mobilised two appliances and two water rescue units to the scene. Crews left at 6.42am."

A spokeswoman for the Coastguard added rescue teams sent were from Greenock and Helensburgh after police requested their help around 4.30am.
