Police warning over scam phone calls from people claiming to be from BT

Police have issued a warning after a number of scam phone calls were made from people claiming to be from BT.

Broxtowe North Police, which covers Eastwood, Kimberley, Nuthall and nearby areas, said residents in Nuthall have reported "suspicious telephone calls".

The caller, who claims to be working on behalf of BT, says the customer's line will be cut off if they do not agree to go to one of their extensions.

A spokesperson for Broxtowe North Police said: "Please be on your guard and do not press any numbers that will connect you to these scammers."

A statement on the BT website reads: "Fraudsters are known to make calls claiming to work for BT, when it's actually a scam. They may ask you for personal information, want access to your computer and in some cases, ask for your bank details.

"Don't be fooled, this is fraud. We take these cases very seriously. So please let us know if you've been the victim of a scam call so we can work to stop fraudsters in their tracks."

The telecommunications giant added it would never ask a customer to make a payment after threatening to disconnect a service, or tell a customer their router or IP address has been compromised.

BT says a 'call protect' system is included with all landlines, and customers can chose to blacklist certain nuisance callers online or by calling the customer service team.
