Police warning for dog owners after Alabama Rot case in Cumbernauld

Police Scotland have issued a warning for dog owners after a confirmed case of Alabama Rot in Cumbernauld.

Alabama Rot is a flesh-eating disease that damages blood vessels in both the skin and kidneys which can affect dogs of all ages and breeds.

Police are advising owners take preventative measures to stop the disease from spreading.

They say:

  • Try to avoid very muddy areas
  • Wash feet/legs after walks
  • Check paws and legs regularly

The force have also listed potential symptoms to be wary of, including:

  • Lower limb sores
  • Lethargy
  • Thirst
  • Mouth/tongue sores
  • Reduced hunger
  • Vomiting

 Police Scotland dogs Tweeted earlier today: "We have just learned of a case of #AlabamaRot in the Cumbernauld area.

"Please do not panic, here is a couple of tips to help keep your dogs safe.

"Contact your vet if you are worried about your furry friend."
