Police warning as youths planning 'large gathering' in Gorseinon, Swansea

Police are urging parents to 'play their part' and keep their children safe and out of trouble after becoming aware of a potential large gathering of young people.

South Wales Police say they expect the gathering to take place on the evening of Monday, August 24 in the Gorseinon area of Swansea.

Officers have warned that underage drinking, criminal damage, fighting and abusive language "will not be tolerated."

It comes after a previous incident in July, where we reported how around 300 youngsters poured into a Swansea's Kingsbridge Fields for a mass gathering, with underage drinking and fighting reported. Some are said to have travelled from as far afield as Haverfordwest for the mass meet-up.

In Wales, under coronavirus pandemic restrictions, it is only permitted for gatherings of up to 30 people to take place outdoors, as long as physical and social distancing advice is adhered to.

Addressing parents, police inspector Jay Davies said: “We know the last couple of months have been tough, but we'd ask you to consider the impact anti-social behaviour may have on other people. Last month we had around 400 youths congregating for an unauthorised gathering.

"The young person’s safety and preventing further issues are a priority and we would like to make it clear - underage drinking, fires causing criminal damage, fighting and foul and abusive language is all anti-social behaviour and this will not be tolerated.

“As parents or guardians you do have an important and valued role to play – we would ask you do you really know what your young people are up to?

"You may feel your young person isn’t doing anything wrong but the impact of their behaviour on others can be significant and they could also be breaching Covid-19 legislation which is in place to keep everyone safe.

Inspector Davies added: “We are increasing patrols on Monday evening and also working with British Transport Police around young people coming in by train.

“I would strongly urge parents to reinforce how important it is that the young person behaves responsibly when outside of the home.”

Police plan to increase patrols in the area, and will also be working with British Transport Police to monitor young people coming in by train.
