Police have urged people to be vigilant after a Co Tyrone woman was scammed out of a "significant sum of money" in a phone fraud.
A PSNI statement said: "Police are urging members of the public to be on their guard following an incident in County Tyrone in which a victim was scammed out of a significant sum of money.
"The woman received a call from a person purporting to be from a telecommunication company and was persuaded to download an App, which would supposedly enhance her online security."
Chief Inspector Rory Hoy said: “We understand how distressing it is for victims who are swindled out of their hard-earned money. It is a horrible experience for them, and I want to take this opportunity to urge people to be vigilant.
“The threat of fraud, both online and offline, against the public is a constant focus for us and I want to take this opportunity to again appeal to people that on no account should anyone disclose their personal or financial details over the phone. Always err on the side of caution.
“It’s so important that you take time to speak with any vulnerable family members. Make sure they know that legitimate providers will never seek personal details, such as banking information, over the phone. This is a really important conversation to have."
