Police warn tourists to heed signs after man drowns on Esperance beach

Police are urging tourists not to ignore warning signs after a man drowned at an Esperance beach on Sunday.

It is believed the man fell off the rocks into the water at Chapmans Point, a short drive from the town centre.

Acting Senior Sergeant Ryan Rawlins said members of the public who were at the beach called police around 12:20pm.

Water Police coordinated search and rescue operations, alongside Esperance Surf Lifesaving and Marine Rescue, but were unable to save the man.

It is the second drowning in less than five months in the same area, after a 29-year-old tourist from Pakistan was swept off rocks while taking photographs in September.

Police said since September, they had received multiple calls about people ignoring signs and putting themselves in dangerous positions on the rocks.

Acting Senior Sergeant Rawlins said the man who drowned on Sunday was not a local and, despite having ties to the area, was not familiar with the conditions.

He urged tourists to be more careful and do their research before visiting the area.

"We want everyone to come to Esperance and have a good time and we know we've got beautiful beaches that everyone wants to wants to visit them," he said.

"But, whether you're swimming on the beaches or driving on the beaches, pay attention to the warning signs."

Investigations into the the man's death are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police.
