Police warn Tasmanians 'lock your doors' after carjacking incidents

Carjacking incidents have prompted Tasmania Police to advise the public to lock their car doors when travelling alone or in dark and isolated areas.

The warning comes after the second attempted carjacking in less than a month.

Police allege two men, aged 34 and 28, approached a third man as he parked his sedan in the Claremont Village Shopping Centre about midnight last Friday.

They allegedly demanded his car keys and assaulted him before leaving without the keys.

Two weeks ago, a 29-year-old man allegedly attempted to carjack a vehicle being driven by a female on the Midland Highway.

Detective Inspector Craig Joel said Tasmanians needed to realise carjacking was not just a mainland crime.

"It is something that we see on the mainland and it is relatively new for us but it's a reminder for us that unfortunately we can't be complacent," he said.

"It's a reminder that if you are driving alone to lock your car, lock your doors and if you are parked or otherwise travelling in an isolated area, or in dark places it's really important to be aware of your surroundings.

"When you're exiting ... your vehicle just be aware who might be watching."

Inspector Joel said interstate incidents often involved dark or isolated places.

The two men allegedly involved in the latest incident have been charged under the state's new carjacking laws.

Police also allege the same two offenders forced entry to the Claremont RSL on September 26 and stole alcohol.
